The People’s Republic of China launched the BeiDou-3 positioning satellite on a Long March rocket at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province at 15:29 on February 1 local time (16:29 JST). It was placed on a prescribed orbit (altitude of 22,000 kilometers, orbital inclination of 55 degrees).

This launch brings the Bei-Dou system, started in April 2007, to twenty-one satellites. Among them, five are satellites on a geostationary orbit (GEO), eight are on a medium earth orbit (MEO), and eight are on an inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO).
