EU-Japan GNSS Mission (Day 1)
The Cabinet Office, Government of Japan, the European Commission, the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation and the European GNSS Agency (GSA) held the EU-Japan GNSS Mission in March 2017. This event was for entering into an arrangement for enhancing EU-Japan policy cooperation to determine priority industry fields utilizing satellite positioning and create new businesses and services.
EU-Japan Cooperation Towards Tokyo 2020: Tapping into the Potential of GNSS Application
On the first day, March 7, seminars introduced the latest information about Galileo and the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), as well as GNSS-related applications used at the London 2012 Summer Olympics and the potential of GNSS applications for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020). The panel discussion was entitled, “Strength and Issues of EU-Japan Collaboration: The Role of Industry/Government/Academia.”
First, the opening remarks were given by Mr. Hiromichi Moriyama, executive director, QZSS Strategy Office, National Space Policy Secretariat, Cabinet Office.
Keynote speeches by Ms. Diani and Mr. Kogure
Ms. Fiammetta Diani, deputy head of the Market Development Department, European GNSS Agency (GSA), gave the first keynote speech, entitled, “GALILEO and its initial services: the users perspective.” Next, Mr. Satoshi Kogure, director of QZSS development, National Space Policy Secretariat, Cabinet Office, gave a keynote speech entitled, “Multi GNSS World.”
Speeches by members of the government and private sector
Mr. Masanori Tsuruda, director, Space Industry Office, Manufacturing Industries Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), gave a speech entitled, “Case Study: GNSS Application in Japan.” Mr. Naoya Aoto, director, National Land Information Division, National Spatial Planning and Regional Policy Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), gave a speech entitled, “High-accuracy Indoor Positioning Project – Providing assistance for everyone to avoid stress to travel.”
Ms. Yoshie Muramatsu, senior consultant, Arup, gave a speech entitled, “Use of ‘Big Data’ – London 2012 Olympics, subsequent developments and Opportunities for Tokyo 2020.” Mr. Thierry Torlotin, chief mobility solutions, Syntony, gave a speech entitled, “Control Your Sky.”
Mr. Katsumi Nemoto, chairman of the Environment-Automobile Materials Committee, Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association, and president and CEO, Sakai Kotsu and Domeikotsu, gave a speech entitled, “GNSS Application in Japan.” Mr. Mark Dumville, CEO, NSL, gave a speech entitled, “Protecting GNSS services in Europe and beyond.”
Mr. Jun Sudo, analyst, Sungoliath Suntory, gave a speech entitled, “GNSS x Sports.” Mr. Kenji Sakamoto, manager, ASICS Corporation Institute of Sport Science, gave a speech entitled, “GNSS Utilisation in Sports.”
Mr. Jelle Reichert, founder, JOHAN Sports, gave a speech entitled, “Performance Analytics for Teams.” Mr. Jacob Bangsgaard, CEO, European Road Transport Telematics Information Coordination Organization (ERTICO), gave a speech entitled, “ITS for Smart Cities and Big Events.”
Panel discussion
The final panel discussion was moderated by Professor Naohiko Kohtake, associate professor, Graduate School of SDM, Keio University. The three panelists were Ms. Diani of the GSA, Mr. Kogure of the Cabinet Office, and Ms. Muramatsu of Arup. The topics included expectations and challenges related to Tokyo 2020, expectations for EU-Japan collaboration, and industry/government/academia initiatives.
